MSP Training Courses
MSP (Managing Successful Programmes) goes beyond delivering outputs from projects. Co-ordinating delivery from multiple projects or staged delivery from very large projects needs a layer of control above and beyond project management. MSP can provide that layer of oversight. But MSP can be used to achieve much more. Transformational change comes about when we exploit the capability inherent in project outputs. In business as usual we need to achieve outcomes and deliver benefits that are of strategic importance. MSP allows us to plan to achieve outcomes and benefits with the wider stakeholder community and then pace the delivery from projects to allow optimal change within business as usual.
What is MSP?
Since its inception a decade ago MSP has always gone beyond co-ordinating projects to encompass transformational change programmes. It provides: Principles The underlying basic ideas of programme management are expressed as seven simple principles that:
- Have been proven in practice
- Apply to all programmes and
- Empower you by explaining what you should be aiming for.
The MSP Principles encapsulate how programme management can achieve strategic value by:
- Focussing on the vision of a better future,
- Adding value by achieving synergy and
- Delivering demonstrable benefits.
Themes Some elements, such as making plans and managing quality, need to be managed continuously throughout a programme. MSP explains a comprehensive set of just nine themes that will ensure all aspects of a programme can be managed in a consistent and coherent way. Those from a project management background will recognise some themes being applied in a wider context. But themes such as Leadership, Benefits Realisation and Blueprint Design will strike a chord with business managers as ways of planning and achieving change in the business. Transformational Flow The MSP transformational flow does contain half a dozen processes that each describe inputs, outputs, activities and roles. But the cyclical nature of the transformational flow emphasises that programmes are likely to last for a significant length of time. Throughout the programme there will be many planned and unplanned iterations as knowledge builds and circumstances change.
What are the benefits of MSP?
MSP helps the organisation to:
- Achieve alignment between strategy and projects
- Co-ordinate effective and timely deployment of change
- Accomplish smooth transition from current to future business operations
- Focus on optimal benefit realisation
- Improve management control through informed decision making
The organisation gains a tool for “doing the right projects” that will leverage the investment in project management. MSP is a step on the road to portfolio management and links in to the people side of change.
